Deer Park Tours
The Houghton Estate is renowned for its rare herd of white fallow deer that roam in the parkland surrounding the Hall; probably the largest herd in the world. In total, there are over 1,000 deer on the Houghton Estate. As well as the white deer, Houghton is home to red deer (one of the largest deer species found in deer parks in the UK); Chinese water deer; and Père David deer.
All have unique attributes and distinctive markings, and during a Houghton Deer Park Tour, we hope to show you examples of each species and tell you more about them, as well as sharing insights into the history of deer at Houghton, which can be traced back to the early 18th century.
Led by Head Gamekeeper Robert Hall, the tour also encompasses information about Houghton's conservation and wildlife management programmes.
