A message from Richard Ernst, Head Gardener:
We have been delighted to welcome lots of volunteers in 2023 and cannot currently accept any more applications. We will post here if this situation changes and it’s always worth following the Walled Garden’s dedicated Instagram page houghton_walled_garden – which is a lovely way of keeping an eye on what we’re up to all year round. Thank you!
Volunteer in our walled garden and enjoy working alongside expert horticulturalists and fellow volunteers. It’s a great way to enjoy the wonderful surroundings of our five-acre garden – one of the finest in England and winner of many awards.
Houghton Hall’s Walled Garden is open to the public several days a week during spring and summer, and as part of the team, you will have plenty of opportunity to engage with our visitors, answering their questions and sharing your love of gardening.
We’re a friendly, enthusiastic bunch; volunteering here is fun and can be very beneficial – both mentally and physically. It’s also a great way to learn more about horticulture.
There’s always something to enjoy in our garden – and always plenty to do!
From blossoms, wisteria and roses to fruit and veg production. From glasshouse plants and cultivation to herbaceous borders.
The tasks can be as light or heavy as you wish, with flexible hours to suit.
If you’d like to find out more, please email head gardener Richard on info@houghtonhall.com, including a daytime telephone number. Tell us about your level of gardening experience, plus any particular areas of interest, and we’ll get back to you for a chat and maybe arrange an informal visit.
